Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is right around the corner. Two of the most iconic superheroes in all of comic lore are about to go rounds. From all of the trailers & TV promos, it’s pretty obvious that these two don’t like each other at all! They don’t respect each other’s methods, their histories and they feel that the world would be better off if one or the other weren’t around anymore. Anyway, since the film is only a short distance away, I had to choose a side and it was a difficult decision. Between the two title characters, I stand with the Man of Steel.
I need to set the record straight and acknowledge that both Batman and Superman are characters that I grew up admiring either on television, in film and in their comic lore, but when it comes to this historic cinematic feat, I had to say that I am backing the Son of Krypton over the Caped Crusader. I had my reasons for why I came to Superman’s side. Those reasons are thus.
- Superman isn’t the threat Batman makes him out to be-Bruce Wayne has every right to be afraid of Superman and the things he is capable of doing, he’d be stupid not be, however if he took a minute to realize that the death toll in the Man of Steel’s bout with Zod in Metropolis, would have been much higher if Zod was triumphant over Superman. Batman seems convinced that Superman is a threat but has Superman convinced anyone else otherwise? No.
- Superman has proven that he isn’t the enemy-Kal El may have unintentionally brought Zod to Earth but he wasn’t standing with him when Zod’s forces laid waste to Smallville and Metropolis. People were killed in the Battle for Metropolis, but Superman has also saved lives in the skirmish. In this movie, he carries himself as a man who accepts responsibility for what has happened and wants to convince the world that he is a friend, not a foe.
Superman can kill Batman but he won’t-The two characters have plenty of reasons not to like each other and Batman will go after Superman with the intent to kill. Superman should expect the Dark Knight to throw every weapon in his arsenal at the Man of Steel, but Superman can beat Batman as easily at a fly-swatter can terminate a winged insect, but he won’t unless Batman gives Superman a reason to kill. The idea of restraint may give Superman an edge over Batman.
Ultimately, I expect this movie to blow me away and no matter who comes out on top, I will look forward to seeing how these two characters will interact with each other when they meet for the first time in a film.
