For some time now, 20th Century Fox and Marvel has been planning to give fan favorite X-Men character Gambit his own solo movie. Channing Tatum has been confirmed to produce and star in the film as the title character and recently Rupert Wyatt has been confirmed to direct the standalone feature, but the project is in serious danger thanks to recent development stating that Tatum’s contract with the picture is in danger of falling apart and he is strongly considering walking away from the feature.
One individual close to the project told TheWrap that Tatum’s reps are still in active discussions with the studio but acknowledged that “something is up.” The situation will have to be resolved quickly, as “Gambit” is slated for release on Oct. 7, 2016.
This is certainly a shocking turn of events. Gambit had been a feature I was observing for a while now, but for a situation such as this, with Tatum stating that he is considering leaving the feature, it’s certainly an eye opener to be sure. If Tatum does indeed abandon the role, a potential name to consider would be Taylor Kitsch, the actor who played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
UPDATE-According to sources, the crisis regarding Tatum’s contract to play Gambit has been resolved and the actor is officially locked in to play the title character.
