Movie of the week: Chappie

This week, I will see the third feature film from writer/director Neill Blomkamp, where the last hope for humanity isn’t human at all. Chappie is a robot, who is given sentient programming courtesy of a man named Deon. He becomes a machine that can think and feel for itself but he also becomes a threat to the oppressive robotic police force controlled by Vincent Moore. Chappie stars Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver.

What am I expecting to see?: Neill Blomkamp exploded onto the mainstream scene with District 9 a few years ago, then he lost a little bit of that edge with his sophomore feature Elysium and now he returns with his third feature that explores the same familiar territory as his other features and I essentially need to know if he still has that magic from District 9 or if he is in a slump and from the looks of Chappie, it suggests the latter more than the former. The cast looks as if they cannot succeed because the real star of the film will be the action and visual effects and honestly, I don’t have the heart to see this, but I will give Chappie a chance because of Blomkamp’s history.
