Movie of the week: Focus

Before anyone sees them in costume as Deadshot and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, audiences will have a chance to see Will Smith and Margot Robbie together in this week’s featured movie. Smith is a con-man named Nicky Spurgeon who is in the throws of his latest scheme. All goes well, until Nicky has a Casablanca moment; a girl from his past darkens his door and everything begins to unravel. Focus is written and directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, and also stars B.D. Wong, Rodrigo Santoro, Gerald McRaney and Laura Flannery.

What am I expecting to see?: Will Smith is the king of the blockbusters and Margot Robbie certainly made a name for herself after her breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street. The two of them together, especially since they are already linked together for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, is certainly going to draw a crowd even though everyone around them are just along for the ride. Focus has a tone that makes it seem as if it will be a relative hit, perhaps the first hit of the year, and the story seems promising enough to be legit. This week, my focus is Focus and I expect good things to come of it.
