It certainly has been a long wait, but I think the long lull of transitioning between 2014 to 2015 has ended. At least it has for me and this blog for my first official movie of the week for this year will be Kingsman: the Secret Service. Matthew Vaughn is heavily influenced by the classic James Bond films of the 1960s and has expressed interest in directing a James Bond movie sometime in the future, but for now, it looks as if this adaptation of a comic book series about an unruly and raw street kid named Eggsy who is recruited into a covert secret intelligence agency at odds with a sadistic technology prodigy with malevolent intentions. Kingsman: The Secret Service features a heavily British ensemble including Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, Jack Davenport, and Taron Egerton, in addition to Mark Hamill and Samuel L. Jackson.
What am I expecting to see?: I know Matthew Vaughn from his work on X-Men: First Class and I was a fan of what he brought to the X-Men universe and recently I learned of how much a fan he was of the early 007 films, so I see Kingsman: the Secret Service as an audition; perhaps lobbying for a chance to finally live his dream directing an action/spy thriller in the Bond tradition that could serve as a stepping stone to direct a James Bond movie one day. This movie looks like a fun ride; an action movie with something to offer especially since there are hardly any movies worth seeing right now. I expect Kingsman: The Secret Service to begin 2015 with a respectable bang.
