Marvel’s Avengers Initiative is months away from closing Phase 2 with the release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron and months further away from beginning Phase 3 with the release of Ant-Man. One of the installments of Phase 3 will feature the Marvel Universe’s Sorcerer Supreme-Dr. Strange. Director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter Jon Spaihts will introduce the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and after months of searching, auditioning and negotiating with various actors ranging from Oscar-caliber actors such as Joaquin Phoenix and Jared Leto to Keanu Reeves and Ethan Hawke, Derrickson, Spaiths and producer Kevin Feige have found their man in Benedict Cumberbatch.
From producer Kevin Feige: Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.
Dr. Strange will be an origin story, giving audiences insight as to who Strange is and what he is capable of.
The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
Cumberbatch is certainly not shy on the big-screen. Last year was a career year for the star of Sherlock as he shined in several successful features such as Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug, August: Osage County and 12 Years a Slave. I personally feel that Cumberbatch is too good for television and his talent and dexterity are better served in cinema. All the same, I feel that he will bring his all to Dr. Strange and liven-up the Avengers storyline to the point where when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are ready to stand against the Mad Titan Thanos, Strange and his mastery of the mystic arts can even the playing field. Dr. Strange will arrive in theaters on November 4, 2016.
