Movie of the week: “The Boxtrolls”

Finally! I know it has been forever since I posted a What I’m Seeing post, and that is because nothing interesting has been released in the past few weeks, but we’re back with the latest animated adventure from Focus Features and Laika Entertainment. Based on the literary work of Alan Snow, an orphaned boy is raised by a family of cave-dwelling gremlin-like creatures but when he comes of age and to grips that he is a human, he takes it on himself to defend his family from a sinister exterminator bent on their destruction. Following the acclaimed films “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” this week’s featured film is “The Boxtrolls,” directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi and featuring the voices of Sir Ben Kingsley, Jared Harris, Tracy Morgan, Elle Fanning and Isaac Hempstead Wright.

What am I expecting to see?: Hopefully a movie that can wake up the masses from this lull we’ve been experiencing for the past month and a film that both children and audiences can enjoy. Since it is from the same studio as other notable Oscar-caliber animated features such as “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” I would hope that “The Boxtrolls” lives up to the reputation Laika has built for itself over the past few years. I think this could be a light and upbeat movie directed by Annable and Stacchi and written by Irena Brignull and Adam Pava and if this is successful, I believe a multitude of audiences will enjoy this creepy yet creative feature. This movie may not have a lot of “star-power” but it has the look and feel of a movie that audiences want to root for. I’ve been anticipating the release of “The Boxtrolls” for some time now and I wouldn’t mind being impressed with it.
