The battle between Jaegers and the Kaiju will rage on now that director Guillermo Del Toro has announced that “Pacific Rim 2” will become reality. Last year, “Pacific Rim” was one of the most original summer blockbusters to grace the silver screen in recent years. Del Toro’s visually stunning sci-fi spectacle starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman about a future war between inter-dimensional creatures wreaking destruction and humanity was initially powerless to prevent these creatures from destroying the Earth and killing millions of people. Humanity’s last best hope is an operation called the Jaeger Program, where two pilots are psychically liked to a gargantuan machine capable of combating the creatures and keeping the casualties to a potential minimum. “Pacific Rim” may not have been a big money spinner domestically, but it was an international hit featuring a well-established plot, outstanding visual effects, decent acting and was a feature of incredible creativity. Del Toro will return to direct and co-write the screenplay with Zak Penn with assistance from Travis Beachum. The notable difference is that “Pacific Rim 2” will fly under Universal Studios’ banner thanks to the agreement with Legendary, instead of Warner Bros., where the first film was produced. No word on who will round out the cast, but “Pacific Rim 2” aims to arrive in theaters on April 7, 2017.
