Phase 2 of Marvel’s “Avengers Initiative” begins with Robert Downey Jr. suiting up once again to thwart a maniacal terrorist with unprecedented reach in the new film, “Iron Man 3.” Shane Black takes over the duties as director of the latest installment of the “Iron Man” franchise where Tony Stark is still reeling from the events of the Avengers’ stand in New York City. While Tony is trying to get himself back on track emotionally, a new enemy named the Mandarin emerges and he isn’t afraid to hit Iron Man where it hurts. Iron Man is all that stands in the way of the Mandarin and total destruction, but Tony has to make a few upgrades and program new tricks to fully utilize the power of his arsenal to stop him.
What am I expecting to see?: Essentially, I’m expecting Shane Black to get the “Iron Man” franchise back on track after its predecessor disappointed by adding a comedic flare that couldn’t be taken seriously. This installment looks intense, dark and downright gritty, so that helps its appeal quite a bit and the new characters played by Guy Pearce and Sir Ben Kingsley look to bring new life and balance the presence of Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. I’m expecting the kickoff to “Phase 2” to begin with a bang and I’m expecting this movie to redeem the failure of its predecessor. “Iron Man 3” just looks like a great time at the movies.
